«Divest» is a short excerpt of the Emmy Award-winning series “Have You Heard From Johannesburg.” It was created 7 months ago so that organizers in today's social justice movements can learn from, and be inspired by, the story of the global movement that was started by US students who demanded divestment from their universities from the South African apartheid regime. The movement achieved the divestment of the universities and these were then followed by international companies who eventually divested so extensively, that it made clear to the regime that the days of apartheid in South Africa were numbered.

«The Take - Lessons from the students anti-apartheid movement». A powerful campus protest and boycott movement in the US played a crucial role in helping to bring down apartheid in South Africa. Today, many US student activists are heading back to school, ready to continue the fight to end what they refer to as Israeli apartheid and genocide. What lessons do the veterans of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement see echoing today?

Discussion
The event is part of the action week “A Week Framed Around the International Day of Human Rights” of students4palestine_bern, a students group who is actively working to get their demands met – one of them being the divestment of the University of Bern of all forms of funding of the state of Israel and associated institutions. A group of students4palestine_bern will discuss the documentary and the podcast with us. What is comparable and where are differences between the fight against the South African apartheid regime and the Israeli apartheid regime and genocide? What has the impact of the students movement in Bern been so far and how can all of us contribute to grow the students efforts into a movement?
